This is the story of Fast Eikaiwa Kyoushitsu

It has been a great year of growth for FEK. Beginning 1997 with perhaps 35 students, we now have nearly 150. We moved our location from a private residence to a large office nearby. Our students are happier, and our revenues are greater than our expenses.

ファースト英会話教室の今日までの歩みをご紹介します。
１９９７年の始めは３５人ほどの小さな英会話教室でしたが、今はその５倍近くの１５０人の生徒を持つようになりました。生徒さんの増加に伴い、より活動的な場を求めて、小さい一室から広いオフィスに移動しました。生徒たちは広い教室でのびのびと学ぶ場を得て、また経営も軌道に乗ってきました。

These Days...

FEK now has between 100 and 150 students learning about computers and English language. FEK teaches not only English conversation, but grammatical, spelling and reading skills to all ages of Japanese people. Fundamentally, FEK bring beginners to intermediate and higher levels. Some of the beginners are in their 40s and some are only 5 years old. This is one unusual aspect of FEK - its wide range of student background.

今、ファースト英会話教室には、１００人から１５０人のコンピュータと英語を学ぶ生徒さんがいます。またファースト英会話教室では、英会話だけではなく、文法、つづり、読み方をさまざまな年齢の生徒さん達に教えています。基本的には、私たちは、初心者を中級以上のレベルまで上げたいと考えています。初心者の中には４０代の人もいれば、まだ５才になったばかりの幼稚園児もいます。幅広い世代の生徒さんがいるのが、ファースト英会話教室の自然な形なのです。

PULL, not PUSH...

Another is the way in which English and computer skills are taught. Rather than using high pressure and sometimes violent methods, we believe that education is a lifetime pursuit. Because of this, we lead students to a good learning environment - pulling rather than pushing them to learn. The result is that students learn to move further than their peers. In English, the phrase "herding cats" is often used to describe a fruitless pursuit. But given a saucer of warm milk, cats will gather and just lap it up. We have found that students come to our school even when they do not have a class. They come because they like it here.

以下では英語とコンピューターを、どのような心構えで教えているかを書き記してみました。
私たちは、よくあるような強いプレッシャーを与えたり、勉強を押しつけるよりも、生徒達を良い学習環境に導くよう努力しています。私たちは生涯教育を信念としているので、学ぶことを押しつけるのではなく、学ぶ気持ちに導いてあげるよう努力しています。その結果、生徒さんは友人達よりも、もっと先に進もうという意欲を持つようになるのです。英語で言う ”猫の集団 ”とは何も良い結果を得られなかったときの例えとして使われますが、でももし、お皿に温かいミルクを入れて置いたらどうでしょう。何もしなくても猫達は集まり、お皿のミルクを残さずきれいになめてしまうのです。私たちの教室には生徒さん以外の人たちも集まって来ます。その人たちもまたここが好きなのです。

Hardware and Software....

This is our secret. We also use the latest technology - computers and software, music and examination using computers and multimedia technology. Our students are encouraged to use e-mail and the world wide web to communicate with people all over the world. But this is not window dressing. Many schools show off their computers and then keep students away from their expensive equipment. Our students actually use the computers and learn from them. Our computers are not necessarily the newest, but they are used A LOT. Some of the software is cute and "edutainment", though some is very high in level and dry in texture.

これは秘密ですが、最新のコンピューターやマルチメディアの技術で音楽・調査のソフトなども使っています。生徒さん達は、EメールやWWWを使い、世界中の人々と交流することも準備されているのです。しかもこれは見せるためのものではありません。多くの学校では生徒達にコンピューターを見せるだけで、実際には高価な設備から遠ざけているのが実態です。私たちの生徒さん達は実際にコンピューターを使い、多くの事を学んでるのです。私たちのコンピューターにとって大切なのはいかに良いコンピューターであるかではなく、いかに沢山使われるかなのです。ソフトは、子供らしく教育的なものもあれば、ハイレベルな構成のものまで揃えています。

Our Own Software and Books...

Currently, we are developing our own software that stresses ease of use and cross platform stability. We want to give students the benefit of our advice and help to solve problems even if we are too busy teaching other classes to help them. In this way, we can be in "two places at once" - enhancing productivity and student satisfaction.

現在私たちは、使い易く、どのコンピューターにも使えるソフトの開発を進めています。私たちはレッスン中のとても忙しい時でも、生徒達の問題をすぐに解決してあげたいのです。このようにして、”１度に２つの場所”−生産性と生徒の満足度−を同時に実現できるのです。

History
FEK began with Brad Fast (Brad) and Mitsuko Fujiwara (Mimi). Originally, Mimi made a phone call to try and find a teacher for some students in her area. Very active in community service, she and Brad began holding classes in one little room at one little table every Wednesday night. Students became scarce due to a reluctance to teach older students. As the students got older, they "graduated" from the classroom and went on to learn English at junior high school.

ファースト英会話教室はBrad Fast (Brad)と藤原美津子 (Mimi)によって始められました。
最初はミミは地域の子供たちに英語を教えてくれる先生を電話で探し始めました。
積極的な地域サービスとして、二人で小さな部屋の小さなテーブルで毎週水曜日の夜に、小学生のためのクラスを開きました。年長の生徒達に教えることにあまり積極的ではなかったため、生徒が少なくなってしまったこともありました。生徒達が成長し、中学で英語を学ぶために”卒業”して行ったのです。

Taking a Risk...

But finally, Brad and Mimi took the plunge and went on to teach junior high students. Still it was tough to get new students in that age group with no track record and no students. Well, from those lean times, a lot of knowledge was gained. Still, Wednesdays were enough. And it was a good thing. Brad was commuting by motor scooter in the wind, rain, mud, snow and ice to teach classes until nine p.m. every week.

しかし、ブラッドとミミは思い切って中学生に英語を教えることにしました。この年齢の生徒さんを集めるのはとても大変なことですが、このような危機を乗り越えたことにより、多くの知識を得ることが出来ました。それでも十分な生徒達がいたので、ブラッドは毎週水曜日、雨の日も風の日も凍りつく雪の日も彼のスクーターでこの教室に通い夜９時まで教えました。

Getting Bigger and Better...

Two years ago, Brad and Mimi began talking about where the classroom was heading. Students had increased such that classes were being held every Wednesday and Thursday, and Brad's schedule was filled every other night. He was under pressure from deadlines for his Doctor's thesis, and very busy. Was it just a hobby? Was it, as some competitors warmly insisted, just a lark? Were we just tourists? Somehow, Brad and Mimi knew that it meant more. The smiles of the students, the curiosity and intelligence that they showed, and the confidence that their mothers had in us forced us to rise to the challenge.

２年前から、ブラッドとミミは教室の方針について話し合うようになりました。生徒達は増え、クラスも毎週水曜日と木曜日を使うようになっていました。そしてブラッドの予定も毎日、夜はいっぱいになっていました。彼は博士課程の論文の締め切りと忙しい毎日のプレッシャーに押しつぶされそうになっていました。これはただの趣味？ほかの競争相手が冗談で言ったようにただの楽しみ？ただの通りすがり？なんとなくブラッドとミミにとって、もっと大きな意味があったことは分かっていたのです。生徒達の笑顔、彼らが示した好奇心と知性、そして私たちの挑戦を彼らの母親達が信頼してくれているという自信があったのです。

Computers come...

A computer was purchased in November of 1996, and the fun began. Mimi quit her full time job to work more on classroom organization and special projects. In summer of 1997, the company was formed and other computers and equipment leased to provide a nice environment for students.

１９９６年１１月にコンピューターを購入しました。新しい試みが始まりです。ミミは勤めていた会社を辞め、教室運営と新しいプロジェクトのために働くことになりました。１９９７年夏、事業として始動し、別のコンピューターと設備も借りて、生徒達の環境を整備しました。

Students come...

And they came. Now, classes are held Wednesdays and Thursdays, but also are expanding into Tuesday and Friday as well.

そして新しい場所へと教室を移転しました。クラスは水曜日、 木曜日だけではなく火曜日、金曜日も使うようになりました。

Quantity and Quality...

The classroom building is an office for Brad to work on his new ideas for research and development. It houses five computers, three for student use. We also have two printers, and a library that probably has the largest collection of English language children's books in the Tohoku Region. Multimedia education titles number over 40.

教室の建物はまた、ブラッドの研究、開発のためのオフィスともなりました。j事務所には５台のコンピューターがあり、うち３台は生徒さん達がいつでも自由に使えるようになっています。また、２台のプリンターと、子供向けの英語の本のライブラリー（多分東北一？）があり、これらも、生徒さん達が自由に読んだり、借りたり出来るようになっています。教育ソフトの数は４０以上になります。

The Road Ahead...

Where do we go from here?
Mimi and Brad think often about the future. Brad's doctorate degree should be finished this year, and he will need to spend more time during the day working on consulting projects. Mimi is becoming a better teacher everyday.

私たちの今後は？
ミミとブラッドはこの先についてよく話し合います。ブラッドの博士号取得を終わらせなければならないし、今後はコンサルタント業務のために日中の時間を使うことになるだでしょう。ミミは少しずつ先生としての自覚を持つようになってきています。

Software Dreams...

Brad dreams of writing great and simple educational software because he thinks that no matter how impressive multimedia comes to be, if it is not simple, then it will not be used.
ブラッドは高度でしかもシンプルなソフトの開発を考えています。彼はどんな良いソフトでも使い方がシンプルでないと使われないだろうと考えているのです。

Corporate Work...

Mimi and Brad will also focus more on corporate work, performing services including presentations, translation, interpretation, etc. There is a lot to be done, and they do it better than anyone.
ミミとブラッドはまた、展示会などのパフォーミングサービス、翻訳、通訳などの仕事を手がけて行く予定でいます。他の誰よりも良い仕事をして行くつもりでいます。

She was born in a small countryside village in the north of Nagano prefecture. (Site of the 20th Winter Olympics )
After graduating high school in her area she got job in Tokyo.
She spent three years in Tokyo. She met Yuichirou and they moved to Sendai.
They started new life in Sendai.
She had her first baby Haruka at 27, and 4 years later, she had hers second daughter Tomomi.
In April, 1993, she opened a room for a English conversation class.
In November, 1997, she started working for Fast English conversation classes.

MIMI's STORY

ファースト英会話教室は、東北地方の中核都市で、”杜の都”と呼ばれる、住みやすい都市アンケートでも常に上位に上がる宮城県仙台市にあります。仙台市の北西部、なだらかな丘に囲まれた静かな住宅街、”泉ビレジ”が私たちの町です。そんな小さい町の中に英会話教室を開きたいと思ったのは、もちろん私自身が、若いときから英語が大好きで、いつか習いたいと思っていたのはもちろんですが、成長してくる私の二人の娘達に、英語を習わせてあげたいと思ったからなのです。それも出来ることなら、きれいな発音の外国人の先生から。そして先生探しが始まりました。幸いなことに、友人が私の希望をかなえてくれるすばらしい先生を紹介してくれました。彼の名前はブラッド・ファースト。礼儀正しく、思いやりがあり、はっきりした発音できれいな英語を話す、まさに私が探していた先生にぴったりの若いアメリカ人ででした。

"Fast English conversation classes" is located in the North West of Sendai which is called "Forest city" and chosen as one of the most comfortable cities in Japan in questionnaire surveys many times. This is my lovely town of "Izumi Village". Its surrounded by low hills and is a quiet, beautiful town. I wanted to my daughters and their friends to learn English when they were very young in this town. That was the biggest reason why I had a small English class in my house, but it was not only for them, it was also for me, because I had a plan for learning English again. I also expected native English teacher with clear pronounce. I called to some places to ask for a teacher. Fortunately, a friend of mine introduced me a wonderful English teacher who granted my wishes perfectly. His name was Brad Fast. He was polite and gentle young American, and spook English very clearly.


さっそく私は生徒探しを始めました。私の娘の友達のおかあさん達に声をかけると、すぐに１クラスの人数が集まりました。私はこの時、いかに日本人が、特におかあさん達が英語の重要性を感じているか、また、多くの人が私自身が考えたのと同じように、良い機会と環境があったら自分の子供たちに英語を習わせたいと思っているかを知ることが出来ました。でもこの時、まだ私はそれ以上のことを考えることが出来ませんでした。

Soon, I started to find his students. It was not so hard to make a class with my daughter's friends. I had a kind of feeling that there are many mothers who want to their kids to learn English in their young ages if they could have a good chance and good environment. And they had known that how important thing for their kids to learn English while they were just young kids. That was just same thought that I had been thinking for a long time. But I had no idea more than that at that time.

教室は自宅の１室を提供することにしました。その頃私は近くのお店でパートタイマーとして働いていたので時間をうまくやりくりして、水曜日の午後はファースト英会話教室のお手伝いが出来るようにしました。


I offered a room in my house. I had another job for a part time near by house. And I managed my time to help Brad at his class every Wednesday evening.

そうしているうちに、人づてにこの教室のことを聞いた見ず知らずの人からも問い合わせの電話がかかってくるようになり、その人たちと話すと、やはり同じ思いを持った人たちで、教室に子供さんを通わせるようになりました。新学期前の２月頃になると生徒募集のチラシを地方紙に入れるようになり、生徒数は次第に増えて行きました。
生徒数が増えてくると、いかにクラス作りをするかが大きな問題となってきます。学年が同じでも能力が違ったり、友達関係が影響したり。これは今でも私たちの課題です。
しかしいつも心がけているのは、いかにその生徒にとって良い環境であるかということです。ですから１度作ったクラスを短い間で組み直したり、生徒を別のクラスに移動してあげたりします。そして良い雰囲気でみんなが学習意欲を持ったクラスに落ち着くとそのクラスは常に良い状態で長続きします。でも、それと同時に、ブラッドへの拘束時間が多くなり、毎日忙しい彼のスケジュールを調整するのが難しくなってきました。

In a few months people who I haven't met called me asking our class. I was glad to hear that the mothers of students mothers talked them about Brad's class. We knew that we had same opinion with English. And their children joined in our class. We also put flyers in the local newspaper in February before new semester has started, and we got more students luckily. Therefore increased members, making up class was becoming hard and hard. Though if they are in the same age, or same grade at the school, their ability at English was very different naturally. Sometimes their friendships cause problems on their study. Well, it is still big problem for us. Whatever may happen with us we try to not forget that everything has to be for the students. We are very flexible to rearrange the classes or move student to another class if it was not good environment for the students. At last a good class makes up in good atmosphere with in hard work, and it will be very stable for a long time. But another problem had happened with Brad. We increased some classes, and he had restricted by those classes. He was very busy every day and every night,and it was very hard to keep time for the classes.

生徒達が増え、一般のクラスも出来ました。みんなそれぞれに英語が好きでもう一度勉強し直して、今後のプラスにして行きたい人たちばかりなので、お互い刺激し合い、ライバル意識をひそかに燃やしながら、果てしなく長い英語学習の道を歩んでいます。

Some adults joined us, and we made up adult class. They like English and they want to make good use of English in their future. They are good rivals and stimulate each other even they know that learning English and go to the end of it is a long long way .


１９９６年１１月、私はその頃勤めていた通信販売の受付のパートをやめ、ファースト英会話教室のために働くこととなりました。私の念願だった英語関係の仕事に就きたいという願いがかなったのでした。まず、何もわからなかったコンピューターを使いこなせるようになる勉強から始めました。失敗の連続の日々が始まりました。それでもそのうち何とか必要な仕事をこなせるようになりました。

November,1996. I quit the job at a mail-order business company. And I started to work for Fast English conversation classes and for new business. It was my dream to work at somewhere using English. First of all, I started to learn using computer. It was also start of the days of failures, but now I can use computers somehow when I need it.


こうして、生徒が増えて行き、私たちはさまざまな性格や考えの人々のことを考えるようになりました。そしてこのファースト英会話教室のあり方もあらためて考えるようになりました。私たちが辿り着いたのは、単に生徒を集めて言葉を教えることだけではなく、いかに彼らにプラス要素を与えることが出来るかということした。前向きで積極的な人生のために、少しでも力を与えてあげることができたら、、、。

Following by increasing students, we had to think about many different people and our way to go. We got right way finally. It is not only teaching English as language, but also try to encourage them for their positive life. We wish we could give them a lot for them.


私たちのレッスンでは押し付けや無理強いは避けるようにしています。もし無理やり教え込んでも、それが楽しくなければ、そして英語が好きでなければまったく意味がないのです。なぜなら言葉、それは人と人を結ぶ橋、お互いを理解し受け入れるための空港のようなものです。もし彼らが不安や嫌悪感を”英語”の中持ったとしたら私たちの教える意味はないのです。

We avoid give them pressure or forced to learn even it happens in another schools. It dose not make sense if they don't enjoy English or they don't like English. Conversation, it is like a bridge that connect people to people. It is like an airport that for understand each other and receive each other. There is no mean if they have sadness or they have a hatred with in English.


そして、ついに私たちが、新しい教室とオフィスを持つ時がやって来ました。
新しい教室で更にクラスが増え収入面でも安定してきました。今私たちはこれからの方向について考えていますが、常に生徒のための教室であることを心において行きたいと思います。

At last the day came to us when we moved to new office. We got more new students and
our business became stable. Now, we are talking about our way from now, and
we will not forget to think about what is best way for our students .
